Kritsa Gorge
Hiking

Psiloritis is one of the 3 major mountain ranges of the island, where is located the highest peak of the island, Timios Stavros (2456 m.). From the top we can enjoy the view of the biggest part of the island. At the same time, we can view the Aegean Sea in the North and the Libyan Sea in the South. Also, we can see Rethymnon and its entire region and South Heraklion. Due to its special natural beauty, the area belongs to the Global Geoparks Network of UNESCO.
We will start very early in the morning from Agios Nikolaos (5 am). The route takes about 2.5 hours to reach the mountain range. The climb takes 3 to 3.5 hours with an elevation gain of about 800m via a well-marked trail. The return will be made by the same path. Optionally we can visit the woodcarving museum in the nearby village of Axos. The ticket costs 5 euro.
On the way back we will pass by the village of Drosia or Jeni Gave with its old name. The village was traditionally a stopping place for walkers-excursionists . There we will taste the local Cretan cuisine.
Return 6 pm.
